Wearables for children

GPS watches, SOS buttons and first phones-on-the-wrist. What survives a school year, what lasts a school day, and what parents actually need versus what's sold to them.

Start here, before any product page

Three things decide whether a child's wearable works, and none of them appear in the marketing: how long the battery lasts on a real school day, whether the school allows it, and who ends up holding your child's location history. Get those wrong and the features don't matter.

The four options, honestly

"Kids' smartwatch" covers four quite different products at four price points. Most disappointment comes from buying one type while expecting another.

Don't use an item tracker as a child tracker

Bluetooth tags are designed to find objects. They report a position only when someone else's phone passes near them, so in a quiet area a child can be effectively invisible for long stretches. They also have no SOS button, no way for the child to call you, and no alert when the child leaves an area. The manufacturers say plainly that these are not child-safety devices, and they're right.

Battery is the specification that decides it

A child's wearable has one job at 3pm: still be on. Battery figures on the box are measured in standby, not in use — and a watch that spends the day taking calls, updating location every few minutes and being played with lands far below the quoted number.

The practical rule from published testing: 4G watches with calling and video last one to two days and need charging nightly. No-plan watches last three to seven days. If nightly charging isn't going to happen in your household — and with a seven-year-old it often isn't — that's an argument for the simpler device, not a better 4G one.

Check your school's policy before you buy

This is the step most parents skip, and it's now the most likely reason a watch ends up in a drawer.

As of December 2025, 35 states and Washington, D.C. have enacted laws or policies on student device use in K–12 classrooms, and a 2026 Brookings study found nearly 98% of students attend a school with some form of restriction. Many of these explicitly name smartwatches, not just phones — California's Phone-Free Schools Act covers smartwatches directly, South Carolina's policy names them alongside phones and tablets, and New Jersey's requirement covering smartwatches begins in September 2026. Virginia moved to a bell-to-bell policy from 1 July 2026.

Teachers noticed before the laws did: in a 2024 EdWeek survey, 40% of educators said smartwatches posed a behavioural or disciplinary challenge, 11% reported a full ban already in place and a further 30% were considering one.

What this means practically: a watch bought for reassurance during the school day may be required to be off or in a bag for precisely those hours. It can still do useful work on the walk to and from school — but buy it for that, knowingly, rather than discovering the restriction afterwards.

Carrier-certified, or open market?

Two cellular watches can look identical and be very different underneath. One sold through a mobile operator has passed PTCRB certification and that operator's own testing and data-handling requirements. One bought on a marketplace has usually cleared only FCC radio authorisation — the legal minimum, which says nothing about encryption, data retention or who holds the data. Security: this category has a poor record

Children's trackers are cheap, sold in enormous volume, and frequently built on a licensed platform rather than one the brand controls. The result is a documented pattern of exposure:

The documented cases
  • Researchers examining devices running ThinkRace tracking services identified vulnerabilities affecting a very large installed base, including flaws that could allow location access and, on some models, microphone eavesdropping.
  • The SMA-WATCH-M2, examined by the AV-TEST Institute, exposed the data of around 5,000 children on unencrypted servers — names, addresses, ages, images and voice messages.
  • Trackers from Shenzhen i365 Tech, including the T8 Mini and roughly 30 related models, were found exposing location data for approximately 600,000 children and elderly users.

The common thread isn't one bad brand. It's that many brands don't run their own back end — so the company named on the box is often not the company storing your child's location history. We cover this in detail in who actually holds your family's location history.

What changes in April 2026

The FTC's amended COPPA Rule took effect on 23 June 2025, with a compliance deadline of 22 April 2026. Three changes matter to parents buying a connected device for a child under 13:

  • Biometric identifiers — voiceprints, face scans, fingerprints — are now protected personal information. Watches with voice messaging fall squarely inside this.
  • Separate parental consent is required before a child's data can be disclosed to third-party advertisers, which in practice means behavioural advertising must be off unless a parent opts in.
  • Written retention limits. Operators must have a documented retention policy and may not keep a child's data longer than needed for the purpose it was collected.

Worth knowing: COPPA is US law and applies to operators serving US children. It does not automatically govern a device sold from overseas into another market — which is exactly where much of the budget end of this category comes from.

Nine questions before you buy

If a product page or a seller can't answer these, that itself is the answer.

  1. How long does it last in use — calls, location updates, screen on — not in standby?
  2. Does my child's school permit it, and under what conditions?
  3. Which company operates the back-end platform, and in which country is the data stored?
  4. How long is location history retained, and can I delete it and the account permanently?
  5. Is the connection between watch, app and server encrypted?
  6. Who can call or message the watch — is it strictly a parent-approved list?
  7. Can two parents or carers both receive alerts, or only the account holder?
  8. What happens if the company stops trading, or the network it uses is retired?
  9. Is it waterproof, and will it survive being worn by a child every day for a year?

No prevention claims. No wearable prevents a child from becoming lost, being harmed, or coming to any other harm, and none is a substitute for supervision. A device can shorten the time it takes to find someone. That is a real benefit, and it is a different claim.
