How to read this table

What each column means, and how to check it yourself
  • Connectivity — the radio the device uses on its own. LTE-M and NB-IoT trade speed for battery; 4G LTE supports voice and video but needs charging far more often.
  • SIM type — shown under the connectivity type, and a lock-in signal as much as a technical one.
    • pSIM — a physical SIM card in a tray. If the device is unlocked you can usually move it to another carrier, or take it abroad with a local SIM. More freedom, and one more thing to lose.
    • eSIM — the SIM is built into the chip and provisioned over the air. Simpler to set up and impossible to lose — but on most kids' watches it also means the device only works with the plan the brand sells, at whatever that costs next year.
    • Both — some devices support either, which is the most flexible arrangement.
    The question worth asking before you buy: if this company doubles its monthly price, can I take the device elsewhere? With most eSIM wearables the answer is no.
  • Operating system — shown beneath the SIM type, and it predicts how long the device stays secure.
    • Android / Wear OS — full Google stack. Most capable, and the only one where security patches follow a published schedule you can check.
    • AOSP — Android Open Source Project, without Google's services. Common on kids' watches because it's cheap to license and easy to lock down. The catch: patches depend entirely on the manufacturer choosing to issue them, and many never do.
    • RTOS — a small real-time operating system rather than a general-purpose one. Excellent battery life and a much smaller attack surface, but limited features and rarely updatable in the field.
    • watchOS — Apple's. Long support, tightly controlled, and only on Apple hardware.
    Why it matters: an AOSP watch that never receives a patch is running whatever was current when it shipped, for as long as the child wears it.
  • Sold via — through a mobile operator, or on the open market. A carrier-sold device has already cleared that operator's own testing and data-handling requirements on top of PTCRB, so this column doubles as a compliance signal in its own right.
  • Compliance — four separate things, shown as one column. Hover any badge for detail.
    • FCC — equipment authorization. Required by US law for any device with a radio, so this is the floor, not an achievement. The FCC ID is printed on the device or in its settings; look it up in the FCC database, which is also where published SAR figures come from.
    • PTCRB — North American carrier certification for cellular devices. Search the model at ptcrb.com. For a cellular wearable, absence is informative.
    • COPPA — certification under an FTC-approved COPPA Safe Harbor program: kidSAFE, PRIVO, TrustArc, iKeepSafe or ESRB. Worth understanding what a tick here does and doesn't mean. COPPA itself is a law, and every operator serving US children under 13 is bound by it whether or not they hold a certification. What a tick shows is that an FTC-approved body has audited the practices and stands behind them — a rarer and more checkable thing than a manufacturer stating its own compliance.
  • SAR — specific absorption rate, in watts per kilogram, shown with the standard and test position on the device's review page. Wrist devices are usually measured against the FCC's 4.0 W/kg extremity limit, not the 1.6 W/kg body limit used for phones, so figures are not comparable across categories. The full explanation →
  • Platform operator — who actually runs the back end. Frequently not the brand on the box.
  • Data storage & retention — three things about where your data goes and how long it stays.
    • Storage — the cloud provider actually holding the data, such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, where the company discloses it.
    • Region — the country it lands in, which decides which laws protect it and which authorities can reach it.
    • Retention — the actual period stated in the privacy policy, such as "24 months." We show Not stated in red where the policy commits to nothing — wording like "as long as necessary" is the most common case, and it is a finding rather than an answer.
